We're all feeling the pinch as the cost of living rises. Here is a sample itinerary for an enjoyable day out in Colchester that's very easy on the wallet.

10.00am: Visit Firstsite. This contemporary art gallery was built just over 10 years ago and showcases the best in national & local art in a constantly changing exhibitions programme. Admission is completely free, but donations are welcomed.
11.30am: Get your walking boots on! Download one of our guided walking tours from our website & either walk the Roman walls, follow in the footsteps of the soldiers of the Siege, of discover the secrets of Hidden Colchester. These trails are free to download & print at home, or available to buy from the VIC at £1-£2.50. Each one takes around 1.5 hours to complete. Alternatively, if you would like to get back to nature & explore the great outdoors, download the Castle Park Tree Trail, a very detailed look at the many species of trees that reside in the park.
1.00pm: Enjoy your picnic in the great outdoors. Castle Park is an award winning green space in the heart of the town centre. Find a spot down beside the river, or by the Victorian bandstand (if youre lucky, a band might be playing). Alternatively, if the park is busy, the St Botolphs Priory ruins are surrounded by green space. They're tucked away just off of Queen St.
2.00pm: Visit Hollytrees Museum at the top of Castle Park (home to our HQ) This free to enter museum is packed with domestic items from yesteryear including grandfather clocks, dolls houses, old kitchen appliances, portraits and items from childhood. It's popular with familes, and older folks who like to reminisce.
2.30pm: Walk from town to sea along the Wivenhoe Trail. This 4.5 mile route follows the River Colne from Colchester Town Centre, to the scenic riverside idle of Wivenhoe. Download the map from our website, follow the trail on the 'Go Jauntly' app, or pick up a printed copy of the map from our office for £1.
4pm: Explore Wivenhoe, the picturesque waterfront & views across the river to Rowhedge (best seen while enjoying a pint on the benches of the Rose & Crown pub!) and if there is an exhibition on, visit the Sentinel Gallery before either walking back to Colchester, or taking a short trip by bus or train for under a fiver.
Affordable Evenings: Colchester Arts Centre often have performances scheduled that are 'Pay What You Can Afford', so that people on lower incomes can still have access to cultural activities. Check what's on over on their website. Also, the nearby Mercury Theatre often have 'LATES' events such as live music or Cocktail Cabaret in their bar, for which there is no admission fee, just be prepared to purchase a couple of drinks.
