In the aftermath of the Second World War, the term "twinning" was established. Cities and towns up and down the UK were paired with others across Europe as a means of cultivating friendships and strengthening international relations as a way to foster peace. Today, twinning promotes cultural exchange, and Colchester is proudly twinned with three European cities!
We get by with a little help from our friends!
Today, Colchester Twinning Society regularly arranges tours and exchanges with the European cities of Avignon, Imola and Wetzlar. You'll even find parts of Colchester Castle Park dedicated to each of our twinned cities!
The Avignon Garden (18th-century owner of this land, Charles Gray, once attempted to build a castle mote on this land!) in Castle Park are a place where much-admired floral displays flourish throughout the summer. The Imola Garden is home to a popular fish pond and provides a quiet oasis for reflection. A short walk away, you'll find the elegant Wetzlar Garden, with its neatly maintained flower beds and central water feature, gifted by local fundraising group King Coel's Kittens.

Who Are Our Sister Cities?
In 1969, the town of Wetzlar linked arms with Colchester. It is a historic town with Roman connections of its own and a beautiful medieval Old Town. The striking gothic style Cathedral is an impressive landmark as well as the many timber framed buildings within the city centre.
Avignon was twinned with Colchester in 1972. With its fascinating history, including its role in the Roman Empire, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Palais des Papes, and the incredible Pont d'Avignon (immortalised in a famous French nursery rhyme), it is a city full of character. Only half of the famous bridge still survives today!
Last but certainly not least, Colchester twinned with the city of Imola in 1997. Both cities have Roman roots and rich histories. Imola is home to the impressive medieval fortress Rocca Sforzesca and is perhaps best known today for its links to Formula 1!

What Now?
Today, these special relationships continue to strengthen links between communities, cultures and generations. Whether through visits, exchanges or lifelong friendships, twinning helps bring a little of Europe to Colchester and a little of Colchester to Europe. Next time you're exploring Castle Park, take a moment to visit the gardens of our sister cities and celebrate the connections that make our city part of a wider international family!
