Visit Colchester's in-house vegan, Megan Fowler, takes us on a whistlestop tour of some of her current favourite meat-free offerings in town. Don't forget to browse our Vegetarian and Vegan restaurant listings either!

I’ve been vegan for a long time & whenever people used to ask me what the hardest part about it was, my response was always ‘Going out for dinner’. It’s easy enough to be creative in your own kitchen and make your own tasty plant based food, but restaurant menus have had a bit of catching up to do.

Luckily in the past 10 years, things have really changed in Colchester, and there are now so many options for vegans, vegetarians and people looking to reduce their meat intake… Where do I begin?

Breakfast

If you’re a fan of the (slightly) healthier version of the full English, Colchester has got you covered. Sip & Tuck (pictured above) is a very popular bistro at the top of East Hill (conveniently near to Visit Colchester HQ!) and they serve their vegan breakfast with aubergine slices and delicious scrambled tofu. We have a branch of Bill's (below) on our High Street that serve a great hummus & avocado on toast, and The Centurion Pub at the top of North Hill serve their vegan brekkie with hash brown ‘bars’.

Lunch

Head to The Nourish Co. on Crouch Street for lunch if you’re in need of something ‘nourishing’.  Falafel & More (pictured below) at the top of Queen Street serve some of the best falafel and hummus ever, and Made & Found Café at the bottom of Sheregate Steps make great toasted sarnies.

Dinner

When it comes to the evening, it depends what you’re in the mood for – there’s vegan pizza on offer at Dough & Co on Eld Lane, a whole vegan menu at the Yak & Yeti Nepalese and Indian restaurant (below) just over the road from Colchester Town Train Station, and the best crispy fried tofu available at North Hill Noodle Bar. If you’re after Beer & a Burger (or Hot Dog) it has to be the Three Wise Monkeys on the High Street.

Streetfood

If you happen to be in Colchester on a market day, The Chickpea is a must visit. 2 or sometimes all 3 of their dishes of the day are usually vegan friendly & they will offer you extra chillis if you like your curry hot! Bubble & Sweet make delicious bubble waffles covered in ridiculous toppings, and Vool sometimes have a stall selling vegan goodies like vegan ‘wagon wheels’ & peanut butter cups.

Notable Mentions

We have to mention Natural Foods, the small but perfectly formed health food shop on Eld Lane who sell a range of snacks, dried & chilled foods and natural remedies.

These are just some of the excellent places in Colchester where plant based food is on the menu, if you’ve had something tasty that we’ve missed off of the list, leave a comment below & let me know what’s missing!
