Dedham Boat Hire on the River Stour

Get ready to man the oars with this perfect day out for friends, families and couples alike. After hiring a boat, you’ll be able to enjoy an hour of rowing (or watching somebody else row!) on the River Stour. The Boat Yard Boat Hire can be quite busy so you may have to wait, but it’ll be worth it.

Open during the summer months, be sure to ring ahead to ensure boat hire is available on the day you intend to visit to avoid disappointment. This activity is suitable for dogs and children, making it perfect for the whole family!

If you’d prefer to rest your arms, why not let someone else do the sailing? Put away those oars and put up your feet while you enjoy a peaceful journey in some of Colchester’s most notable sandy neighbours.

Tours departing from Mersea Island and Brightlingsea are available, offering everything from dog-friendly seal watching to an afternoon tea sailing! Private tours are also available, so be sure to reach out to the skippers for more information.

While you’re in Mersea Island, you might enjoy some water based activities like kayaking, sailing and paddleboarding at Mersea Island Watersports – you can learn more about what’s on offer on our ‘Fun Family-Friendly Water Activities in Colchester’ post.

Take A Family Friendly Paddle Boat Ride

PLEASE NOTE: Unfortunately the Paddle Boats are unavailable for the Summer 2024 season. We apologise for the inconvenience and hope you can enjoy Colchester's other wonderful offerings!

Staying closer to the city centre? No problem, you can still enjoy a self-propelled paddle boat on the lake in Castle Park! A local favourite for decades, the boats are available seasonally in Lower Castle Park.

Both swan and duck boats are available, with different seating configurations. Children must be supervised, and booking is not required, you can just turn up to pay at the kiosk! Be sure to check with the team for the most up to date opening hours and pricing, and remember that this activity is weather permitting.
