It's National Gingerbread Day! Gingerbread is the perfect treat to get you into the festive spirit, but did you know this sweet treat plays an important role in one of Colchester's annual historic events?

Keep reading to learn about the role of Gingerbread in a historic Colchester tradition which dates back to the 16th Century, and how to celebrate Gingerbread Day in the 21st Century - with a Colchester twist, of course!

Dating back to 1540, the annual Oyster Fishery opening ceremony takes place in September and marks the beginning of the oyster season. It's celebrated with a toast to The King, some of Colchester's famous Oysters, and a side of gin and gingerbread - don't mind if we do! I guess you could say: we put the GIN in Gingerbread!

So, to help you celebrate this Colchester tradition this Christmas, we've put together a list of tasty spots in the city where you can celebrate this tradition.

Where Can I Find Gin in Colchester?

In the past few years, Colchester has become a popular base for gin-enthusiasts, and continues to grow. From premium small-batches to local distilleries, there's never been a better time to turn to Colchester for these spirits.

Three Wise Monkeys has a secret Speakeasy in their basement, serving over 50 artisan spirits from around the world - so you'll have no problem finding one that suits your taste. Another great option is the knowledgeable team at Two Brews on Church Street - while their namesake is beer, they've also got options for wine and spirits too. If they don't have what you're looking for, they'll be able to tell you where to find it!

While you're in the market, be sure to look into Colchester Gin Distillery - an up-and-coming small-batch producer, focused on creating a premium product distilled with locally sourced botanicals.

Where Can I Find the BEST Gingerbread in Colchester?

Most of the local cafes and bakeries in Colchester rotate their menus, so we'd definitely recommend contacting them ahead of time to see what's on the menu for this week. As such, we can't promise that gingerbread will be available, so we'd recommend being open to trying something a little bit different instead.

Favourites amongst Colchester residents include Victoria Yum and Crouch St. Bakes, which both serve tasty baked goodies from cakes to pasties, as well as loaves and brownies. Alternatively, for a more traditional-feeling treat, why not visit Small Talk Tearooms? Notable for its quirky decor and making you feel like you've stepped into a time capsule, Small Talk Tearooms serves a selection of freshly baked cakes, hot drinks, afternoon and cream teas and some lunch items too.
