Colchester really has it all: history, culture, an Area of Natural Beauty and even a beach! A beach? Yes, a beach! But much like the rest of Colchester, it may not be exactly as you know. Follow the River Colne down to Mersea Island, home to the Colchester native oyster, and get ready to explore an ideal spot to get out and enjoy the fresh air.

How Do I Get to Mersea Island?

Mersea Island is a short drive or bus ride from Colchester, and offers up a slice of island life. Whether you choose the East or the West side, the green of Cudmore Grove Country Park or the gold of the sandy beaches, we know you'll have a fantastic day packed full of hidden gems.

If you're travelling to Mersea Island by bus, you'll find it easiest to explore West Mersea. Local bus companies run about once an hour out to the island and drop off along one of the main streets, which are just a short walk away from local attractions like Monkey Beach and Mersea Island Museum. Mersea Island cannot be accessed by train.

If you're driving, you'll have excellent access to both sides of the island. Please be considerate when parking. We'd recommend using this guide from the West Mersea Town Council for the most up-to-date list of car parks and their location: Where to park in West Mersea.

Out and About: Explore the Island or Enjoy the Ocean Breeze

Go for a peaceful paddle on the beach, bird-watch in Cudmore Grove Country Park, take a boat trip out into the estuary, or simply for a walk across the tranquil island. You can also take an extended walk around the entire island on a mixture of footpaths and public beaches, however some planning is required to avoid high tides.

A Quintessentially Mersea Island Day

Learn about the island's history at the Mersea Island Museum, stroll along the beach and see the iconic pastel beach huts before rounding off your day with some fresh catch from The Company Shed or one of the other fantastic spots, like Colchester Oyster Fishery Ltd

Why stop there? Turn your daytrip into an enchanting weekend by the sea with an overnight stay. And if the weather's looking bright, you can try your hand at some paddleboarding with the fantastic team over at Mersea Island Watersports the next day, take a ride around the island with Mersea E-Bikes, or go crabbing on The Causeway!

Is Mersea Island Good for Dogs?

It could be argued that there are no better spots in the Colchester District than Mersea Island, which boasts excellent walking routes, a mix of exciting and enriching terrains and plenty of dog-friendly local restaurants and businesses. Many people who live on the island have dogs of their own, so you'll surely meet a few fluffy residents along the way.

Is Mersea Island Good for Children?

Mersea Island is perfect for children and families looking for a laid-back day on the water-front, or a day full of water activities. Long stretches of beach are perfect for splishing and splashing safely, and expansive green spaces are great for exploring and learning about the island's biodiversity.

Whether you'll be crabbing on the Mersea Island Causeway, snacking away on some tasty locally-sourced fish and chips, or rowing with the Mersea Island Watersports team, there are plenty of activities for the whole family.
