National Cat Day (29th October) is quickly approaching! With less than a week to go, we've compiled a handy list of ways to celebrate National Cat Day in Colchester this half term. From visiting adoptable cats for a cosy cuddle session to old toys themed around friendly felines, here are some fun activities to add to your must-do list!
1. Peek through the fence at the King Coel's Kittens Water Fountain
While The Wetzler Garden is currently inaccessible, you can still peek through the fence to see Tim Holding's bronze water fountain, which was commissioned in 2012 by the King Coel's Kittens charity. The statue incorporates a bronze sphere being supported by kittens with water flowing over it from inside a crown. If you'd like to learn more about the statue, contact the Colchester Civic Society - we also have a blog post on some of Colchester's other fantastic sculptures here!
You may also meet some real cats around Castle Park, as the green space is especially popular with local cats from neighbouring houses.
2. Cuddle some cute cats at the Meow Cat Cafe
Since opening its second location in Colchester earlier this year, the Meow Cat Cafe has been a hit amongst families and friends.
And the best part of the cafe? All of the furry friends you see are up for adoption! So, if you've been looking to complete your family, you may just meet your dream cat here.
Top tip: the Meow Cat Cafe can get quite busy, especially over half term, so we recommend pre-booking your slot ahead of time to avoid disappointment. While they do try to accommodate walk-up arrivals, there's no guarantee that you'll be able to visit at your preferred time without a reservation!

3. Pop into Hollytrees Museum to meet the Resident Cats
The cats at Hollytrees Museum are ready and excited to meet you this National Cat Day!
Unlike at the Meow Cat Cafe, these cats are very comfortable in their spots - and have been for some time! At Hollytrees Museum, you can visit some of our cats in the 'Making the Home Gallery', and learn more about how familiar characters (including cats!) inspired popular toys in our 'Childhood Gallery'.
Hollytrees Museum is open 10am-5pm (last admission is 4:30pm) Monday to Saturday, and - if you have any trouble finding them - the museum team will be happy to point out these cats for you.
