If Our Walls Could Talk

If Our Walls Could Talk...

Colchester has a rich and vibrant history so what would our walls say if they could talk? This year Visit Colchester are running an exciting tourism campaign aimed at showcasing the heritage and culture of Britain’s Oldest Recorded Town through the story of its many walls, both old and new, permanent and temporary.

Let Visit Colchester guide you through the chronology of the town and surrounding area, through 2000 years of history right up to the present day: from the oldest and longest Roman Town Wall in Britain to the glittering gold of curves of 21st Century Firstsite. We'd love as many of our visitors, residents and businesses to all get behind the campaign, support the Borough's heritage and share their experiences with us.

We'll be posting and sharing interesting content across all our social media sites, throughout the duration of the campaign showcasing the many amazing things there are to see and do across the Borough that involve walls! From the massive walls of Colchester Castle, the largest Norman Keep in Europe constructed from recycled Roman remains; to the weather beaten wood of Mersea Island’s historic Oyster Packing Shed and the Victorian Chappel Viaduct, the longest bridge in East Anglia and one of the largest brick structures ever built in Britain, we will be showcasing walls both well and lesser known, as well as the more modern walls the town boasts that sit alongside local tourist attractions, eateries, accommodation providers and local businesses.
