All you need to discover Colchester's Christmas Carol Trail is a phone and a pair of headphones!
In among the lights, noise and bustle of Colchester this Christmas you will find twelve previously empty shops, reanimated and brought together in a magical Festive Trail winding through the chapters of the classic story, A Christmas Carol, retold in a narrated musical audio-experience by The Christmas Carol Experience and an array of exciting local artists.
With just a phone and a pair of headphones you can explore the Festive Trail around twelve stops, scanning a QR code featured in each window to hear a narration of each of the chapters, accompanied by Christmas music performed by The Christmas Carol Experience Vocal Group.
Accompanying each of the chapters – bringing to life the ghost of Marley, the long-suffering Bob Cratchit, the ever-optimistic Tiny Tim, and of course the scourge of Christmas, Scrooge himself – are twelve unique pieces of art showcasing work from some of the most exciting creatives working in Essex.
The Festive Trail artists are bringing together an amazing array of mosaic-work, animation, illustration, interactive digital displays, abstract art, weaving, lacework and extravagant Christmas hats! These can all be encountered throughout the Trail alongside curated work from community groups, young people and care homes – and the Christmas Day window itself will celebrate the wider community of Essex.
The Christmas Carol Festive Trail is completely free to access, and available across Colchester city centre from 16 November 2022 to 8 January 2023.
For young children, a downloadable activity pack including a range of activities such as food recipes, word searches, colouring and other festive themed activities can also be downloaded, and printed copies will be available from a number of outlets across the town centre.
Captioned videos will also be available when scanning each window’s QR code, and the narrated tracks for the full Trail can be sent upon request to anyone unable to access the Trail.
The Christmas Carol Festive Trail has been made possible with support from Essex County Council’s Arts and Cultural Fund and Our Colchester’s Create fund.
Here’s what Essex County Council have to say about the fund:
“The Essex County Council Arts and Cultural fund has been designed to help organisations and practitioners to deliver a broad and exciting range of work and activity to engage with and bring residents together.”
“The arts, cultural and creative projects supported by the Essex County Council Arts and Cultural Fund, will contribute to the Levelling UP Essex Strategy and play an integral part in enabling the objectives of Essex County Council's wider objectives as set out in Everyone’s Essex.”
