About
Walton Bridges, painted by J.M.W. Turner goes on display in Colchester Castle.
‘Walton Bridges’ was painted by Turner in 1806 close to his home on the River Thames. It is widely regarded as the first oil painting by Turner to have been based on oil sketches made in the open air, a practice that was to become a significant element to his work, and one that makes this painting so important.
Colchester + Ipswich Museums were instrumental in a bid to help save this important painting for the nation when, in 2019, a rescue bid was launched with Norfolk Museum Service. With the aid of major grants from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Art Fund and a private donor, as well as the support of the Friends of Colchester Museums, this nationally important painting was successfully saved for the East of England and the nation.
This display has also been made possible as a result of the Government Indemnity Scheme. Colchester + Ipswich Museums would like to thank HM Government for providing Government Indemnity and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and Arts Council England for arranging it.
