Discover Colchester's history with an expert guide
One of the best ways to find out about the dramatic events that have taken place in Colchester is to take a guided walking tour led by a blue or green badge qualified Town Guide.
There are weekly tours departing from the Visit Colchester Information Centre throughout the year, with extra tours in the summer months as well as occasional themed tours covering periods such as Roman Colchester and the Siege of Colchester.
For groups, school visits, or large parties, we can also offer private tours at a date and time convenient for you!
Guided Tours of Colchester
Our standard "Camulodunum to Colchester" Guided Tour runs from the Visitor Information Centre every Saturday at 11am, from January to November.
During July and August, additional Camulodunum to Colchester tours run on Wednesdays at 11am
Afternoon tours run at 2pm on Bank Holiday Mondays.
These tours, led by a qualified guide, give you an overview of the town's history by taking you on a 90 minute walk through the town centre. They cover everything from the Romans to the present day. Places are limited on these tours so booking is advised.

Themed Tours of Colchester
Subject for 2019's programme of walks include Roman Colchester, Walking the town walls, the Siege of Colchester, and Victorian Colchester at Christmas.
We are also offering two walks specifically aimed at children and their families.

Book A Private Guided Tour
Private tours can be booked through the Visitor Information Centre and are encouraged for parties of ten or more. The tour can be tailored to suit your requirements, both in terms of content and accessibility.
Private tours can be arranged for school groups to tie in with Key Stages 1, 2 and 3 of the National Curriculum and for Scout and Guiding groups.
We have a limited number of French and German speaking guides.
Please contact the Visitor Information Centre with details of the tour you wish to book. Please include:
Date and time of the tour (tours usually last 1h30)
Number on the tour, and whether participants are adults (16+) or children (4 - 16 years old)
Contact details (Name, Phone, Email, and Name of organisation if relevant)
Any special requirements.
The team at the VIC will then book a qualified Blue or Green Badge Colchester Guide at your convenience.

Self-Guided tour books can be purchased at the Visitor Information Centre for £2.50 and highlight many of the key attractions in Colchester Town Centre.
They are particularly useful for navigating around the maze-like alleys of the Dutch Quarter, ensuring you don't miss any of the sights this fascinating area has in store.
