Details

In honour of International Women’s Day, we are working with the University of Essex to host this one day celebration of strong Essex women.

This FREE festival will share inspiring stories of local women from the last hundred years and explore this issues that continue to affect us today. It includes talks, craftivism activities, film screenings and displays.

The day includes presentations from across historians from across Essex, exploring the lives of suffragettes after winning the vote, pioneers in the workplace and modern campaigner. We will be looking at everyday women, as well as those who became well-known, such as the author Margery Allingham and social activist Mary Whitehouse.

There will also be a range of craftivism activities tackling period poverty, body positivity and women’s rights.

We will be sharing more detailed information about the programme over the coming weeks, but contributors include:

Professor Pamela Cox (University of Essex))
Dr Susan McPherson (University of Essex)
Professor Katharine Cockin (University of Essex)
Southend Museums
Colchester and Ipswich Museums
Essex Record Office

The Women’s Equality Party
The Townswomen’s Guild

Although the event is free, places are limit so we do ask that you book in advance.

PLEASE BE AWARE that the day will be exploring some adult themes and may not be suitable for under 16s.
