The Wivenhoe Trail

One of the most popular local walks, the Wivenhoe Trail is an informal route of about 5 miles, stretching from Colchester town centre to the riverside town of Wivenhoe.

Pick the trail up in Castle Park by the riverside and simply follow the River Colne as it flows out to sea. Download our Town to Sea and/or Town to Port leaflets for a more detailed map and stops of interest.

Most of the walk is along footpaths away from main roads bar a short section in the middle where you cross the river.

Once you reach Wivenhoe, you can jump on a train or bus back to town, continue further along the river towards Brightlingsea, or simply retrace your steps. In the summer a foot ferry operates and you can cross the river to the village of Rowhedge and walk back along the opposite bank.

Walks Out Of Town

Colchester's surrounding areas have many beautiful spots for walking, with the Dedham Vale and Mersea Island being particularly popular destinations.

Download these specially produced leaflets to help you get the most out of these historic areas. Both are full of useful information about the area as well as maps that will help you plan your walking route.
