Plumb Poltergeist

Artists Aaron Angell and Ian Law present Plumb Poltergeist, an exhibition of new work developed out of conversations between the artists over the last six months.

The exhibition centres around four collaborative ceramic boxes based on ‘cineraria’, ancient funerary chests, destined to store the ashes of the deceased. Made at Aaron Angell’s Troy Town Art Pottery, these boxes incorporate Shinzo glazes and are partially glazed with the ash of a plum tree uprooted by Law.

Trees emerge again in a ‘hinterglasmalerei’ painting by Aaron Angell. Made by reverse painting on glass, it is an interpretation of a poster of Richard Doyle’s ‘The Enchanted Tree’, a painting of a giant tree with fairy folk dancing beneath its roots, that once hung in a University of Essex student’s bedroom in the 1970s.

In response to conversations surrounding ‘The Enchanted Tree’, Law presents a series of photographs ‘on Simone Weil Avenue …’ made on location in Ashford, Kent. Named in honour of the French philosopher Simone Weil, the location appeared the antithesis of Weil’s philosophy, but upon reflection may have been an ideal site for the subject of her research. This series becomes a rumination on Weil’s life and writings, utilising only the services and products found on the road named after her.

Aaron Angell (b.1987) studied at the Slade School of Art and is founder of Troy Town Art Pottery. He lives and works in London.

Ian Law (b. 1984) studied at Camberwell and the Royal College of Art. He lives and works in London.
