Details

'Penny Slinger - Out Of The Shadows' is the incredible, untold story of the pioneering British artist Penny Slinger, who came of age in London's 1960s counter-culture with a radical vision of female sexuality.

Such was Penny's initial success that in 1971 Rolling Stone Magazine predicted her work would one day be "as ubiquitous as The Beatle's 'Sergeant Pepper'." Yet by the end of the 1970s, Penny Slinger had 'disappeared'.

Richard Kovitch’s film retraces Penny’s history to find out what happened and reveal how such an extraordinary and significant body of work slipped from popular memory. With exclusive footage of Penny's work and contributions from the radical filmmakers Peter Whitehead and Jack Bond, 'Penny Slinger: Out Of The Shadows' immerses the viewer in the 1960s counter-culture to enter the mind of an artist who’s work expanded our understanding of sexuality and what art can achieve.

The respected critic Michael Bracewell helps us understand Penny's extraordinary output, while the Turner Nominated artists Jane And Louise Wilson explain why Penny is finally enjoying a long overdue renaissance with acclaimed exhibitions in London, New York, Tokyo and Los Angeles.

With a hypnotic, original soundtrack by Psychological Strategy Board and never before seen footage from Penny's 16mm films - including her rarely seen, erotic collaboration with Peter Whitehead ‘Lilford Hall’ (the man who first filmed the Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd), Richard Kovitch’s film is both an important, overlooked chapter in post-war cultural history and an exhilarating trip through the 1960s and 70s that's impossible to forget.

The night also features a live performance from the film's soundtrack artists Psychological Strategy Board.

Doors open 7.30pm, starts 8pm.
