10 days of free films in Wivenhoe celebrating real-life stories.

In October 2015, Wivenhoe Film Club and Moving Image contributed to a
weekend fi lm festival that was held in villages around the Colchester area and
centred on Dedham. The weekend was a success, partly because of the generosity
of local sponsors, and members of both fi lm clubs felt that we could
organise a fi lm festival based just in Wivenhoe at a later date.
In October of last year, we began to discuss what the festival might look like
and how we would fund it. We had heard of other organisations that have run
free fi lm festivals and we thought that we would try and raise sponsorship to
do this too but we also wanted to raise money for local charities. We hoped
that it would be an event that would bring the community together and attract
people who do not attend our usual showings.
We decided that we would like to feature documentaries, biographies and
true stories as these are the fi lms that seem to do best when we collect feedback
from our audiences. This explains the title, Reel Lives.
We spent several months approaching organisations and businesses in the
town and, on the opposite page, you will see a list of our sponsors and to all
of them we owe a debt of gratitude. We also decided on fi ve charities, which
represent a range of needs, which are listed on page 7.
So, we invite you to attend as many fi lms as you can get to, arrive early to
make sure of your free seat and give what you can afford at the end, for our
very worthy charities, all of which will have an appeal delivered on their behalf
at one of the fi lms during the festival.

Getting to Wivenhoe

• By bus: Buses No. 61, 62 or 87 go to Wivenhoe from Colchester town centre (61 and 62 also from Colchester Station), via the University of Essex. Buses are very frequent and run 7 days a week.
• By train: Trains from Colchester Town centre, Colchester Station, and London Liverpool Street all go to Wivenhoe. From the other direction trains run from Clacton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze. Trains run once or twice an hour.
• Walk: follow the Wivenhoe trail from Colchester town centre and the Hythe down to Wivenhoe.
• Cycle: the Wivenhoe trail is part of the National Cycle route 51. Use of cycles on this path is permissive, so be aware of walkers on this popular walking route.
• Car: Access to Wivenhoe is off the A133 from Colchester. Parking is limited in the narrow streets so consider public transport which is easily accessible and frequent.
• Ferry: the Wivenhoe ferry, operated by volunteers, runs in the warmer months from Rowhedge. The Brightlingsea ferry occasionally also goes to Wivenhoe.
