Explore the Beautiful Borough

The Borough of Colchester
A trip to Colchester needn't be confined to the historic town centre. The borough of Colchester holds many surprises and delights waiting to be discovered. From the coast at Mersea Island to scenic Constable Country, a short journey outside the town can transform your visit from an urban adventure to an enlightening exploration of the Essex countryside.

Dedham and Constable Country
The picturesque Dedham Vale is an area of outstanding natural beauty and has long been an inspiration for artists, not least John Constable whom the area is now affectionately named after. Visit the National Trust owned Flatford Mill, or take a trip to the Munnings Gallery to see the work of another artist inspired by the region: Sir Alfred Munnings

Mersea Island
Divided into the rural East Mersea, and small town of West Mersea, Mersea Island is a fantastic place to explore. The wild beaches in the East make way for sandier shores as you head westwards, with pastel coloured beach huts a sight to behold. Famous for its Oysters, you can find acclaimed restaurants serving seafood with the waves practically lapping at their doors. Be careful though, if you don’t check the tides you may find yourself cut off from the mainland for an hour or so!

Wivenhoe
A small town on the outskirts of Colchester situated on the banks of the river Colne, Wivenhoe has a healthy student population and a strong creative community. There are several wonderful pubs and restaurants, and some beautiful walks in the nearby area, not least the Wivenhoe trail which leads you on a riverside path back to Colchester Town Centre.
