Instagram Logo
It's 2019 and no daytrip or short break is complete without a stunning set of Instagram photos or a selfie or two to remember it by.

Fortunately, Colchester's town centre has more than enough great spots to capture that look stunning on any Instagram feed.

We've picked 10 of the most photogenic and instagrammable locations for you to hunt out and strike a pose with on your trip to Colchester. Don't forget to tag us @visitcolchester so we can see what you've been up to!
St Botolph's Priory

St Botolph's Priory was a Norman Priory which was badly damaged during the English Civil War. Today you can walk amongst the historic archways and columns which provide loads of great photo opportunities. Get your angle right and you can also capture the neighbouring tower of St Botolph's Church - a Victorian church in the gothic style and a perfect backdrop for the ruins.

Castle at Twilight

Colchester Castle is the town's most obvious Instagram spot, and with good reason - the Castle looks impressive whatever the weather! The most popular angle is from the south east corner (as seen here), but head around the back to get the Castle's more ancient side, without the Georgian modifications that can be seen from the front.

St Johns Abbey Gate

Situated just a couple of minutes walk outside the town centre, it's worth making the quick journey to grab a photo of the impressive St John's Abbeygate. Once the gateway to a much larger Abbey (Imagine if that was still standing!) feel free to impress your followers by noting it is decorated in East Anglian 'flushwork', where flint blocks are used to create the patterns upon it.

Firstsite Art Gallery

It's not all historic buildings in Colchester either. Firstsite is an impressive gold, curved art gallery that would be an architectural highlight in any European city. Designed by celebrated architect Rafael Viñoly whose practice also created the 'Walkie Talkie' in London, the sweeping curves and 21st century architecture are a perfect addition to any instagram feed. Don't forget to have a look inside either where the contemporary art on display often lends itself o some truly unique photo-opportuniies.

Trinity Street

Colchester's most picture-perfect shopping street is without a doubt Trinity Street in the heart of the town. Timber-framed coffee shops, Tymperleys Tearoom with its secret garden, the historic Trinity Church tower, and perfectly framed views of the Victoria Tower on Colchester's Town Hall all make this a perfect location to get some charming photos of Colchester Town Centre at its finest.

Jumbo Water Tower

If Colchester's Victorian Water Tower doesn't catch your eye during your visit then may we recommend a visit Bethell & Clarke Opticians on Head Street! Watching over the town centre Jumbo, as it is affectionately known, can be seen from far and wide. Get up close to capture its sheer size, or head out of town for a perfect snap of the instantly recognisable skyline it helps to shape.

The Dutch Quarter

Lose yourself amongst the colourful cottages, historic houses, and winding streets in Colchester's maze-like Dutch Quarter. Highlights include impressive tudor houses, photogenic churches, a roman theatre and the birthplace of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. What's more, you'll find plenty of alleyways and vantage points to get that perfect angle of the photo you want.

Castle Park Bandstand

From sculptured flower gardens to swan pedalos, there's almost too many instagrammable spots in Colchester's Castle Park, but pick of the bunch has to be the town's Victorian Bandstand which positively gleams on a sunny day. If you're lucky during the summer months you may even catch a local band playing on it.

Riverside Cottages

Whilst Colchester has its fair share of big tourist attractions sometimes what Instagram calls for is something more modest, and these riverside cottages are a perennial favourite. Situated next to an otherwise busy road, these small tudor residential homes provide an oasis of calm and are instantly photogenic.

Balkerne Gate

Not many towns can boast a gateway approaching 2000 years old, but Colchester is not just any town! The Balkerne Gate is arguably the most photogenic part of Colchester's Roman Wall and is a great photo to snap by itself, or position yourself in the right place and you can use the archway to perfectly frame Jumbo Water Tower.
