Become a Colchester Guide

Colchester Borough Council is supporting the Colchester Tourist Guides Association in offering the unique opportunity to become an official Colchester Tourist Guide.

The prestigious Green Badge qualification teaches the skills required to lead high quality tours of Colchester and surrounding areas, benefitting visitors and residents alike.

The Council’s funding contribution towards the qualification scheme forms part of its ongoing commitment to promoting tourism and making the most of the borough’s outstanding heritage offer.

The Course has been approved by the national body for professional guides - the Institute of Tourist Guiding (ITG). On the successful completion of the course a student will be awarded an ITG level 3 Green Badge for Colchester.

The qualification is a 15 week, part-time course, to be held every Saturday from October 1st 2016 until  March 4th 2017, with final assessments in late March to early April 2017. The fees for the course have been set at £450. This fee covers all lectures, course material plus the examination fees at the end of the course.

The course consists of lectures, course work, presentations and practise guiding. On completion of the course students will have developed skills of communication, group management and gained a sound knowledge of Colchester’s history and heritage.

The course will take place around Colchester, including visits around the town and to key historic and heritage sites such as Colchester Castle, The Roman Circus and St Botolph’s Priory.

Janet Gardner Chair of the Colchester Tourist Guide’s Association said: “With tourism in Colchester set to continue to grow in the future, and with increased demand placed upon the members of the CTGA for their services, the Association recognises the need for a new course. Colchester is spoilt with a wealth of wonderful heritage sites, it is a fantastic opportunity to learn more and become a part of the town’s story.”
