Munnings & The River

Munnings & The River

In 2017 the museum reveals another side to one of Britain’s finest equestrian painters with the launch of a new exhibition: Munnings and the River. The exhibition will explore Sir Alfred Munnings’ artistic and literary responses to a subject with which he had a great affinity and which remained a constant motif throughout his life’s work.

Drawn from the museum’s significant collection of paintings by this prolific East Anglian painter and former President of the Royal Academy, almost fifty oil and watercolour paintings will be presented, as well as sketches, photographs and personal ephemera belonging to the artist.

Correspondence between Munnings and his friend, the Poet Laureate, John Masefield is included in the exhibition and will mark the 60th anniversary of the publication of the artist’s book Ballads and Poems.

Admission to the museum in 2017 includes entry to the new exhibition and access to a further 150 art works hung chronologically and charting the rise of this son of a Suffolk miller to multimillion-pound selling artist.
