About

Dating from the 4th century AD the foundations of a Roman building near the Police Station just off the Maldon Road roundabout is thought to be the earliest known Christian church in Britain.

Having the first church in Britain is an impressive feat for Colchester, however not everyone agrees on its origins and debate is taking place as some believe it is more likely to be a Mythraeum: popular with Roman soldiers. Either way, the foundations have been revealed and marked out and it is accessible to the public for them to make up their own mind.

Find out more about the debate regarding it's origins by reading our 2020 blog post: Colchester's Roman Church - or is it?
