The Wivenhoe Trail

One of the most popular local walks, the Wivenhoe Trail is an informal route of about 5 miles, stretching from Colchester town centre to the riverside town of Wivenhoe.

Pick the trail up in Castle Park by the riverside and simply follow the River Colne as it flows out to sea. Download our Town to Sea and/or Town to Port leaflets for a more detailed map and stops of interest.

Most of the walk is along footpaths away from main roads bar a short section in the middle where you cross the river.

Once you reach Wivenhoe, you can jump on a train or bus back to town, continue further along the river towards Brightlingsea, or simply retrace your steps. In the summer a foot ferry operates and you can cross the river to the village of Rowhedge and walk back along the opposite bank.

Dedham Walks

Couple Walking in Dedham, Visit Essex

The Dedham Vale has the official status of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is perfect for cycling and walking, and this is the best way to really appreciate Constable's landscapes. Delight in discovering this quintessential English countryside at a more relaxed pace, the way that Constable himself did, by following The Painters' Trail, a cycle route taking in scenes and skies so favoured by some of Britain's leading artists.

To help keep the area special and the traffic noises at a low, public transport is the best way to get to Dedham. For an ideal hike, we recommend taking the train from Colchester to Manningtree, then walking across the beautiful landscape, and finally stopping off for a well-deserved break in Dedham town.
