If Walls Could Talk

If Our Walls Could Talk

If Our Walls Could Talk...

Colchester has a rich and vibrant history so what would our walls say if they could talk? This year Visit Colchester are running an exciting tourism campaign aimed at showcasing the heritage and culture of Britain’s Oldest Recorded Town through the story of its many walls, both old and new, permanent and temporary.

Let Visit Colchester guide you through the chronology of the town and surrounding area, through 2000 years of history right up to the present day: from the oldest and longest Roman Town Wall in Britain to the glittering gold of curves of 21st Century Firstsite. We'd love as many of our visitors, residents and businesses to all get behind the campaign, support the Borough's heritage and share their experiences with us.

We'll be posting and sharing interesting content across all our social media sites, throughout the duration of the campaign showcasing the many amazing things there are to see and do across the Borough that involve walls! From the massive walls of Colchester Castle, the largest Norman Keep in Europe constructed from recycled Roman remains; to the weather beaten wood of Mersea Island’s historic Oyster Packing Shed and the Victorian Chappel Viaduct, the longest bridge in East Anglia and one of the largest brick structures ever built in Britain, we will be showcasing walls both well and lesser known, as well as the more modern walls the town boasts that sit alongside local tourist attractions, eateries, accommodation providers and local businesses.

It's Competition Time!

Selfie Time – Snap a selfie to be entered into our prize draw

Prizes up for grabs include afternoon tea for two at the Tiptree tearooms at the Minories, Peter Pan tickets for this year's summer performance at the Mercury Theatre, a personal guided tour of Colchester's most famous walls and some adorable I Love Colchester teddy bears!

So get out and about with your mobile devices and snap selfies alongside Colchester's walls, upload them to your Instagram account using the #IfOurWallsCouldTalk hashtag.

We want to hear your stories. For example, you may have got married at Colchester Castle, simply enjoyed a pint at the Hole In the Wall Pub, or had dinner at the Siege House where the walls still bear the scars of the Civil War Siege! It doesn't have to be history related either, you may have loved a wall packed full of nail varnish, or jam, or clothes in your favourite shop.

We want to see as many walls and hear as many experiences as we can, as these stories form the foundations on which Colchester is built and continues to grow. What would our walls could say if they could talk? Get snapping and sharing to win!
