Getting around in Colchester
Attractions and points of interest within Colchester’s town centre are within easy walking distance of the best restaurants, cafes and shopping areas. With the main town centre being pedestrianized, and many great walks in the surrounding area, you can get a lot done and seen on foot.
Walkers won’t be disappointed with the opportunity to explore Colchester and the surrounding area by foot. Maps are available to purchase from the VIC, whether it be for nature walks or a heritage trail to explore the town’s historic sites – or both!
A range of local walking maps, including Ordinance Survey maps, are available for sale in the VIC.
Some cycle routes run through the town centre, and to surrounding areas. Colchester is also part of the national and international cycle network. National Cycle Network 51 runs through Colchester to Wivenhoe and Harwich and National Cycle Network 1 runs through Colchester to Tiptree and Dedham and Ipswich.
Cycle maps are available to pick up from the VIC or see an interactive version on Cycle Colchester.
National and International cycling maps are available on Sustrans.
Bike parking locations are available on the town centre map. Bike rentals are available from Colchester Roman Circus Centre and Colchester Station.
