Colchester - More Than Britains Oldest Recorded Town

New & Improved Services for Visitors

New & Improved Services for Visitors

This Autumn sees the launch of 2 new projects which will make visiting Colchester even easier, enjoyable and memorable.

New 'VisitColchester.com website

An all-new VisitColchester website will go live in mid-October, just in time for the half-term rush. This major project is a completely new site and will concentrate on themed activities rather than simple listings of places to visit and things to do and will offer local tourism businesses the opportunity to get involved in a variety of campaigns in future.

New content on the site includes: A new area to promote guided tours, A video promoting tours, A 'Mind, Body & Soul' section to help people pamper themselves, An 'Eating, Drinking & Shopping' section

Why change?

The current site is successful and has had more than 440,000 users since its launch in January 2004. It was also awarded the East of England 'Enjoy England Award for Excellence' in 2005. But web and PC technology moves quickly and despite its success the site was based on 'old' techology which means that it is more difficult for A) browsers to see it and B) search engines to find it -- which will ultimately risk a drop in users over time.

People have also become far more sophisticated in their use and expectations of the web. They expect more interesting sites tailored more specifically to their wants and needs which increases the need for sites to be more interesting to view.

New Information Kiosk

The front window at the VIC will be the home of a new web-based information kiosk which will help serve visitors in and out of hours, all day every day, all year round. The kiosk has a real-time link to the VisitColchester website so visitors arriving at any time of the day or night will be able to find out latest accommodation availability, things to do and places to visit and other essential information. When not being used the kiosk will show a subtitled video to encourage them to take guided tours in Colchester.

What will it mean?

Improved information services for visitors and local people alike. Additional promotional opportunities for local tourism businesses. It will help manage visitor flows at the Centre during really busy times.
