full-bloodied, dramatic, supple – Matthew Sharp’s playing captures the attention right through to the end of this major cello concerto” – The Strad on this performance

Matthew Sharp with celloMatthew Sharp conjures the festival into life with a sweep of his bow, his effervescent playing and engaging personality bringing Errollyn Wallen’s best work to life.

The world-class players of the Festival Ensemble will give a mesmerising performance of John Adams’ shimmering, pulsating Shaker Loops and the concert will end with the intense peace of Arvo Pärt’s music; his iconic, deeply-felt Te Deum for double choir, ensemble, prepared piano and tape breathing ethereal life into another of Colchester’s fascinating hidden spaces.

The bus depot was once the Theatre Royal, where Charlie Chaplin, Oscar Wilde, Lily Langtree and Charles Dickens performed.

It is built onto the roman walls of Colchester.
