Jazz Club - Reg & The Readers
Music, Sun 2 Oct 2016, £10-£12
A welcome return for a true local hero, Reg Webb - this time with his latest project, a scintillating six-piece playing compositions by, among others, Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, John Cleary, Marvin Gaye, Steely Dan and Wayne Shorter.
Back in the day, Reg played some memorable gigs at the club, including sitting in with guitar greats Barney Kessell and Martin Taylor, and supporting blues singer Jimmy Witherspoon and flugelhornist Art Farmer. He's also performed with Joe Pass and Roland Kirk. Most recently, of course, Reg and his trio accompanied another guitar great, John Etheridge, on our Launch Night.
A musician whose energy and enthusiasm for what he does knows no bounds, Reg has successfully straddled two differing worlds of music, having been a member of Lennie Kravitz's, the Outfield's and Suzi Quatro's bands, as well as being musical director to Vanessa Paradis and working with the likes of Shirley Bassey.
However, Reg's first love has always been jazz. A pianist whose influences span Oscar Peterson and Bill Evans, to Herbie Hancock, Brad Medhlu and Keith Jarrett, this latest line-up - like others before - has a somewhat non-PC title, but we'll leave you to figure that out!
Accompanying Reg are husband-and-wife sax supremos Holly and Zak Barrett, ace guitarist Tony Sandeman, brill bassist Andy Staples and dynamic drummer Andrew Dowding, who between them have worked with Jason Rebello, Laurence Cottle, Mick Hucknall, Narada Michael Walden, The Foundations and The Real Thing.
